The Meaning of a Name: My Journey of Discovery

Have you ever taken a moment to really think about the meaning of your name? This question came my way recently, and I’ll be honest—I had no idea. Naturally, my curiosity was piqued, so I dove into some research to find out what my name truly signifies.

In Western culture, names often don’t carry the heavy weight of meaning that they might in African or Eastern cultures, where naming a child is a deeply significant act. Names represent identity, and they can even influence one’s destiny!

The Introspective Question

Imagine if your name is ‘Peace’—there’s an expectation to embody that tranquility. But what happens if your name defines the person you’re supposed to be, yet your character feels like a rebellious contradiction? The disconnect can be jarring.

At some point, we’ve all found ourselves asking, “Who am I?” This introspective journey often intersects with childhood memories, influenced by family beliefs, and your life experiences.

Think about it—when your parents called your name, was it often filled with laughter, or did it ring with reminders of a perpetual mischief? Did your name echo someone who was distracted, or remind you of any unique challenges? Those associations contribute significantly to how we see ourselves today.

The Power of Choice!

The truth is people's perceptions can leave marks on our self-esteem and confidence. An insensitive comment can linger far longer than intended, shaping how we perceive our identities. But here’s the good news: we hold the power of choice!

We can redefine ourselves, whether that's through changing our birth name legally or creating a new identity by transforming our thoughts. As you already know, your beliefs shape your thoughts, and your thoughts shape your actions. We have the ability to create empowering beliefs that reflect who we desire to become.

I’m fortunate to know an amazing sister-friend Nkechi Nwafor-Robinson (Empowered In My Skin), whose name means “God’s Gift.” For the last decade or more, she starts each day with a mantra affirming her identity and name. As part of her daily affirmations she says, “… My name is Nkechi, and I am God’s Gift.” The strength she draws from her created identity radiates in every interaction, creating a ripple effect of joy and positivity. She truly is a gift to everyone she meets!

My Personal Discovery

As for me, my name “Barbara” has roots that embodies resilience, justice, strength, and compassion. When I discovered the meaning of my name, I began to see how each word and its meaning were intertwined with my experiences and have moulded me into who I am today. I’ve come to love my birth name not just in its sound, but in its essence. I now weave these profound attributes into my daily affirmations, proudly proclaiming how I want to show up in the world.

So now, I turn the question back to you: What does your name mean? How is it shaping who you are and who you aspire to become? Let's embrace the story our names tell and redefine any narrative that doesn’t serve us. After all, in the grand tapestry of life, we hold the threads of our identities—we get to choose how to weave them together!
