During a recent trip to London, England, I had the privilege of exploring the remnants of an old Anglican church named St. Dunstan’s, situated adjacent to the Tower of London.
As I sat amidst the now lush garden, encompassing the remnants of what was once a place of worship, my thoughts drifted to a time when this church served a different role - a focal point for communal worship, where individuals gathered to listen to Biblical teachings, pray, and engage with one another. Fast forward to World War 2, where the German bombings nearly obliterated the church altering its original function. However, amidst the destruction, a new purpose emerged - a place where locals and tourists could seek solace, snap photographs, or enjoy a peaceful lunch.
In the tranquility of this serene haven nestled in London's core, I drew parallels between the ruined church and the journey of human life. Oftentimes, our past traumas and adversities can leave us feeling shattered, bruised, or devoid of worth. Yet, it's crucial to remember that each of us still harbors a unique purpose.
In the Book of Ephesians, Chapter 2, Verse 10, the Apostle Paul articulates, “We are God’s masterpiece, created to do good works in Christ Jesus.” To me, this verse encapsulates our divine calling - to fulfill God's purpose as devoted followers of Christ.
It may feel challenging to discern our purpose amid our brokenness. Factors such as guilt, fear, low self-esteem, and shame may obstruct our self-worth, dampening our belief in the prospect of hope and divine utilization.

Reflecting back on a personal low point in my life in the summer of 2001, when a grave error tarnished my reputation and almost jeopardized my business, I was engulfed by shame, guilt, and apprehensions of judgment. At that juncture, I believed my existence had reached a dead-end. Fortunately, God perceives beyond our self-perception, bestowing upon us His infinite grace and love to mend and invigorate our spirits. Irrespective of our troubles, God visualizes the possibilities within us - acknowledging our wholeness, creativity, and ability.
The fundamental query arises - what will it entail for you to embrace God's vision and affirmation of your identity?
My friend, the transformative journey requires a conscious decision to break free from the confines of the past. It entails embracing new beginnings and embarking on uncharted paths.
After World War 2, St. Dunstan’s could have succumbed to total demolition and exploitation of its grounds. However, someone beheld the beauty within its ruins and proposed repurposing the dilapidated structure, bestowing upon it a fresh role that now brings solace and joy to many.
Likewise, God perceives not only our shattered state and painful scars but also envisions the potential he can unearth from our hardships. It is crucial to bear in mind that God orchestrates all occurrences - the highs and lows - for our ultimate well-being. He recognizes the inherent beauty within your brokenness and affirms your enduring purpose.
Though the path ahead may deviate from your initial hopes and expectations, rest assured, it is all part of the divine plan. Place your trust in God, maintain unwavering faith, and together, you will navigate through life's intricacies and discover the profound purpose that awaits you.
